Marketypes (“we”, “us”, or “our”) is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information when you use our website and take our personality quiz.

The data controller for any personal information we process is:

Marketypes is not currently registered with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). We are in the process of completing registration; the registration number will be added here once issued.

1. Information We Collect

Quiz responses

Your answers to our 8-question personality quiz (slider values from 0–10) are processed entirely in your browser. They are not sent to or stored on our servers, and we do not ask for your name, email address, or any other identifying information in order to take the quiz or see your results.

Information collected automatically

  • Usage data: If you accept analytics cookies, we collect anonymous data about how you use our site (pages visited, quiz completion, button clicks) via Google Tag Manager. This data does not identify you personally.
  • Server logs: Our hosting provider (Vercel) may collect standard server log data including IP addresses, browser type, and access times. This is processed by Vercel under their privacy policy.

Personality profiling

Our quiz uses your answers to match your gift recipient to one or more of our 16 personality archetypes (“Marketypes”). This profiling is performed entirely in your browser — your raw quiz answers and the resulting Marketypes are never transmitted to or stored by us.

We use the limited information described above for the following purposes:

  • To deliver the personality quiz and show your results
  • To understand how our website is used and to improve our services (analytics — only with your consent)
  • To operate, secure, and maintain the website

3. Legal Basis for Processing

Under UK GDPR, we process any personal data on the following legal bases:

  • Consent (Article 6(1)(a)): When you accept analytics cookies. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Legitimate interest (Article 6(1)(f)): For website security, fraud prevention, and improving our services.

4. Who We Share Your Data With

We will never sell your personal information. We share data only with the following service providers who help us operate our website:

  • Vercel (San Francisco, USA) — our website hosting provider. Processes server logs including IP addresses.
  • Google (USA) — Google Tag Manager and associated analytics services, only if you consent to analytics cookies.
  • Wisp (wisp.blog) and Cloudflare Images (imagedelivery.net)— content management and image delivery for our blog. Blog content (text and images) is served via Wisp and Cloudflare's image network. When you visit our blog pages, your IP address is necessarily disclosed to Wisp and Cloudflare to deliver these resources.
  • Amazon (Amazon Associates Programme)— product images on our recommendation pages are loaded directly from Amazon's servers, and product links go to Amazon. When you view or click these, Amazon may collect your IP address and set its own cookies. See section 5 below for detail.

The Wisp and Cloudflare disclosures above apply only when you visit our /blog/* routes. They are essential to deliver the blog content and operate regardless of your cookie consent choice.

5. Affiliate Links and Product Images

Amazon (affiliate links and product images):Our product recommendation pages load product images directly from Amazon's servers and link to Amazon for purchase. When you view a product or click through, Amazon may collect your IP address and set its own cookies. We earn a small commission on qualifying purchases via the Amazon Associates Programme. We do not share your personal information with Amazon.

6. International Data Transfers

Some of our service providers are based in the United States. Where personal data is transferred outside the UK, we ensure appropriate safeguards are in place, such as the EU–US Data Privacy Framework (and its UK extension) or Standard Contractual Clauses approved by the ICO.

7. How Long We Keep Your Data

  • Quiz responses: Not retained — processed in your browser only and not stored on our servers.
  • Analytics data:Retained according to Google's data retention settings (currently set to 14 months).
  • Server logs: Retained by Vercel according to their data retention policy.

8. Your Rights

Under UK GDPR, you have the following rights in relation to any personal data we hold about you:

  • Right of access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
  • Right to rectification — ask us to correct inaccurate data
  • Right to erasure — ask us to delete your data
  • Right to restrict processing — ask us to limit how we use your data
  • Right to data portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
  • Right to object — object to processing based on legitimate interests
  • Right to withdraw consent — at any time, without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal

9. Automated Decision-Making and Profiling

Our personality quiz uses automated processing to match your gift recipient to personality archetypes based on your answers. This profiling is used solely to provide personalised gift suggestions and does not produce any legal or similarly significant effects. The profiling is performed entirely in your browser — no automated decisions are made on our servers.

10. Children's Privacy

Our website is intended for users aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.

We use cookies and similar technologies on our website. Analytics cookies are only set with your explicit consent. For full details, see our Cookie Policy.

12. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes by posting a notice on our website. The “Last updated” date at the top of this policy indicates when it was last revised.
